Here are some of the top recommended tips to make sure you stay safe.

  1. Store firearms in a locked cabinet, safe, gun vault or storage case when not in use.

  2. Firearms should be unloaded when not in use.

  3. Store ammunition in a locked location separate from firearms.

  4. Use a gun locking device that renders the firearm inoperable when not in use.

  5. Educate everyone in your home about firearms safety. Kids can sign our "Child's Pledge of Gun Safety" to remind them not to touch a gun and to tell an adult if they find one.

  6. Know how your firearm operates.

  7. Anytime you pick up a firearm, keep your finger off of the trigger, point the muzzle in a safe direction, open the action and check both visually and physically to see that it is unloaded before handling it.

  8. Keep your finger off of the trigger until you have made a conscious decision to fire the weapon.

  9. Be sure the firearm is in safe operating condition and the ammunition is right for the weapon.

  10. Be sure the gun barrel is clear of obstruction before shooting.
